Sarah Paige Ryan

Who are you?

I'm a writer, indie publisher, and purveyor of all things weird and wonderful.

Why do you write?

When I was a teenager, I worked at an amusement park. In the mornings, I took photos of guests as they entered the park and in the afternoons I printed the film and inserted it into little plastic key chains. If you ever bought one of them then you know what it's like to point the key chain at the light and look down that little plastic tunnel at your self and your friends, all animated and frozen at the same time. I looked into tens of thousands of tunnels that summer, and I haven't been able to stop writing since.

What's your favorite mythical animal?

The bearicorn.

Oh Yes, There's More!

What historical period will you travel to when the time machine starts working?

The 80s. No, wait. The court of Peter the Great. And then Charles Dickens' London. And then the 80s.

Publications?

Ha-ha. Yes, a few, including the guidebook Moon Handbooks Colorado Camping, a short story in Matter 14: Animal, and my memoir. But mostly, I have enough rejections and orphaned manuscripts to wallpaper the pyramids.

Literary dinner you would most like to host?

Virginia Woolf, Marjane Satrapi, Miranda July, Tina Fey, Margaret Atwood, Ira Glass, Mary Shelley, all of the members of the Old Town Writing Group, and my brother. I'm typing up the invite right now. Actually, I think Virginia should host it and I'll just bring the cheese plate.

Childhood books you wish you could read again for the first time?

The Secret Garden, Anne of Green Gables, and Kim.
